Dal Makhani

Ingredients
- 1 cup black urad dal
- 1/2 cups red kidney beans
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 1 inch ginger, grated or finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon chilli powder
- 2-3 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup cream (optional)
Method
- Soak dal and beans overnight in 3-4 cups of water with the salt.
- Cook drained dal and beans, covered, in 4 cups of water until soft. You should be able to mash the dal with a spoon if it is done. This will probably take about an hour.
- Fry onion and cumin seeds in the butter.
- Add the garlic, ginger and chilli.
- Add the tomato and cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Pour the tomato and onion mixture into the dal.
- Add the turmeric and garam masala and cook together for a few minutes.
- Mix in the cream if using.
