Ingredients

  • 1 cup black urad dal
  • 1/2 cups red kidney beans
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 inch ginger, grated or finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder
  • 2-3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup cream (optional)

Method

  • Soak dal and beans overnight in 3-4 cups of water with the salt.
  • Cook drained dal and beans, covered, in 4 cups of water until soft. You should be able to mash the dal with a spoon if it is done. This will probably take about an hour.
  • Fry onion and cumin seeds in the butter.
  • Add the garlic, ginger and chilli.
  • Add the tomato and cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  • Pour the tomato and onion mixture into the dal.
  • Add the turmeric and garam masala and cook together for a few minutes.
  • Mix in the cream if using.
